Tennessee Titans: Falcon Scrimmage Goes Well

Tennessee Titan’s scrimmaged the Atlanta Falcons on Monday in Georgia. The Titans took an old high school approach, and took a bus to meet up with the Falcons.

This seems fitting for this team. It is a lunch pail bunch. There are no superstars here yet, only NFL caliber players trying to push themselves harder each day in order to win. You would expect the Broncos and the Patriots to arrive by private jet or helicopter. The Titans….the bus fits.

So how did practice go? I heard an interview of the voice of the Titans Mike Keith who was there. He was quite upbeat, although guarded about what he said as far as outcome. He would not say that the Titan’s won the day, but that they competed extremely well.

Mike was very complimentary of the offense. He mentioned that Jake Locker had a very good day throwing the football. Keith also echoed what I saw at practice last Thursday (and I wrote about it extensively here) that Justin Hunter is going to be a star. He said Hunter did what he wanted to do against the Falcons defense.

When asked about the defense he mentioned that they looked comfortable in the 3-4 and gave a good effort against a very good Falcons offense. The Titans were able to get pressure on Matt Ryan and his back up, which is promising for Ray Horton’s defense.

From what I saw in practice and what Keith saw at the scrimmage, Michael Griffin and Jason McCourty are playing really well. Griffin looks really good and McCourty may become a shut down corner the Titans need. Cody Sensabaugh was singled out for having a good day as well. This is not to say that some of the younger defensive backs did not struggle against Falcon receivers Roddy White and Julio Jones. They may not face a better pair all year though.

The most encouraging thing I heard from this scrimmage was a comment from Mike Keith. He said that while he has been watching practice, his feeling is that this is a pretty good football team. At the scrimmage, he said he saw the exact same team in effort and talent that he had been watching back in Nashville. Consistency is a good sign. It is a very good sign.
