Kicker Ryan Succop was signed by the Tennessee Titans today. Succop was let go by the Kansas City Chiefs in order to free up salary cap room, and lost his job to kicking duties to rookie Cairo Santos. Guess where Tennessee plays week one?
Yes, Succop will return to the friendly confines of Arrowhead Stadium where he became one of the most successful kickers in the NFL over the past few seasons. All of this came about as the Titans allowed it’s long time great kicker Rob Bironas to walk during the Summer. The Titans had to do something as the two kickers in camp were just not getting it done, although Travis Coons had won the job. Coons was released today.
Succop set personal bests last season in his Chiefs uniform as he connected for 118 total points and had 47 touchbacks. That is something that Coons was not doing consistently in pre-season. He did not have the leg needed of an NFL kicker.
Succop will definitely help an offense that is sure to move the ball this season. The Titans offense looks good with a solid offensive line, a solid first string group of receivers, two good running backs that can run inside the tackles, and a quarterback that has a lot to prove. Succop will help score much needed points.
The Titans will need every point they can get as the defense looks to possibly be one of the worst in the NFL at this point. I know you can not make much of preseason in the NFL, but I have seen nothing out of Ray Hortons new 3-4 defense that makes me think they can stop anyone. I hope I am pleasantly surprised Sunday in Kansas City.
Fansided writer Josh Michaels of www.kckingdom.com is put in the position of rooting against a kicker he has been pulling for the past several season. Michaels states he hopes that “As a Chiefs fan, if the Titans are in the position to win the game with a Succop kick, I hope he misses badly”. He added, “I don’t sound bitter do I?”. Can’t blame you there Josh.
