Adam Howard Steps Down As Assistant Basketball Coach At Tennessee

Adam Howard, an Assistant Men’s Basketball Coach at the University of Tennessee has stepped down according to Wes Rucker and 247 Sports. Could this be the first domino at Tennessee?

It has been reported that the University of Southern Mississippi’s basketball team is under NCAA investigation for possible wrong doing while on present Tennessee Head Coach Donnie Tyndall’s watch. Tyndall’s Morehead State program was wrist slapped by the NCAA for improprieties there as well. Howard was on that staff as well.

The Southern Mississippi issue as I understand it is that prop 48 players school expenses may have been paid by someone associated with the program. Prop 48 students are students that do not academically qualify to receive an NCAA scholarship. They are  however allowed to enter a school at their own costs and prove within an academic year that they can do College level academic work.

  • It is under investigation as to whether or not the University of Southern Mississippi or associates thereof paid those expenses in some manner. Again, this is just my understanding of the situation and how this all works.

This is not a great start to the Donnie Tyndall era at Tennessee. The Vols had one of the most upright coaches in the country in Cuonzo Martin leave after a up and down season last year that saw the Vols run deep into the NCAA tournament. Martin left to take the California job. It was kind of a mutual break-up between Martin, the University, and Tennessee fans as most thought the team was underachieving with all of its’ talent.

It remains to be seen if Howard’s resignation is in some way related to the Southern Mississippi investigation. Is this a fall guy for Tyndall? It is going to be interesting in Knoxville. This team is going to struggle due to talent and depth. Add uncertainty with Tyndall’s involvement or non-involvement in the Southern Miss investigation, and just suffice it to say it will be rough Winter on Rocky Top. Thank God for the Lady Vols.
