Titans: Fans Are Going To Have To Be Patient

Titans Fans are going to have to be patient in 2015.

I know it is not a popular view among Titans fans, but it is the truth. Fans are going to have to be patient. This team is just not good enough to compete yet.

This is a 4-5 win team at best as they look right now. Unless some miracle happens, the Titans will finish in the cellar of the AFC South. Titans fans are going to have to accept this fact. It took a while for the Titans to get in this bad of shape as a team, and it is going to take just as long to get out of this shape.

Fans are going to get on Whisenhunt quickly. I questioned the hire right off of the bat, but this guy is not the problem. He may not be the solution either, but he is not the problem. This team does not have the depth or star power needed to compete. Guys like Kendall Wright, Delaney Walker and Jurrell Casey could play for other NFL teams.

The new guys Orakpo, Searcy, and Cox are proven NFL veterans, and they will help the defense somewhat. Marcus Mariota and Taylor Lewan look like they can play in this league. Outside of that, they have some nice players, but not a championship type of roster. It is hard to win in the NFL with a roster of “nice” players.

What the Titans need as an organization is stability. Coach Whisenhunt is going to need time to build this team back. Again, I don’t know that he is that guy, but the Titans should not go out and seek another coach quickly. A mile in is a mile back out, and Whisenhunt did not create this catastrophe.

More from Marcus Mariota

They are going to have to build back through the draft. They made a good decision with Marcus Mariota it seems, and the Titans can build around this young quarterback. They can’t do it quickly though. It remains to be seen how the Titans 2015 draft will pan out. Past Mariota, there seems to be little to be excited about.

Jeremiah Poutasi, a third round reach, could become a starter due to poor performance by the regular starters. I am going to review the latter round picks of the Titans over the past 5 seasons in a future article, but suffice it to say it has not been stellar. Heck, the first round picks have not been stellar, until this year.

So fans will need to allow this season to be yet another growing year for this young team. The defense should be improved. It can’t possibly be any worse. The offense will be improved as well. The offensive line must gel first and foremost. Mariota is going to be good. So is Mettenberger. Quarterback is not a problem for this team.

Running back is a different animal. The Titans desperately need someone to step up. Is it Sankey who looks a bust so far, or is it the new kid David Cobb. Dexter McCluster looks better than both of these two so far, but they just don’t trust him for whatever reason we don’t know. Is he too slight? Does he not pass protect? Who knows, but they use him as sparingly as possible.

The receivers are underrated in my opinion. Hunter and Wright are good. However, they have to get the ball thrown to them. Mariota will do just that, if he gets the time. Hunter gets a really bad rap, but they don’t get the ball to him enough in my opinion. Agreed, he has had a hard time against press coverage, and he needs to be the receiver worth a second round pick in his third year. I still expect him to develop into a difference maker. Maybe I’m wrong.

I guess I’m just saying be patient as fans. That is so hard to do. I understand. But another coaching change will set this organization back another few years. Also, who are you going to get as coach? It will be yet another recycled coach that lost and was fired from some other team. That is the NFL way.

No. I say we keep who we have and build through the draft. Hopefully Whisenhunt will be able to build his offense around Mariota, and let LeBeau build an NFL defense that will give the offense the ball. It is all we can hope for.
