Tennessee Vols quarterbacks coach Mike Canales wouldn’t rule out starting two quarterbacks in 2017.

An answer that Mike Canales gave after the Tennessee Vols’ 14th spring practice has fans expecting a two quarterback system in 2017.

Canales was asked if a dual-quarterback system would be possible in 2017 and Tennessee’s quarterbacks coach said “sure why not? You never know.”

This is clearly nothing more than Canales’ not tipping off who the Vols’ starting quarterback will be in 2017.

More from Tenn Truth

We all know Butch Jones has used two quarterbacks in the past (at Cincinnati), but I think the goal in any quarterback battle is for one guy to step up and take a stronghold on the job.

That doesn’t mean the competition isn’t close — it’s very close right now.

Various reports and rumors around the program suggest that Jones is split between Quinten Dormady and Jarrett Guarantano.

It’s important to remember, however, that it’s only April. We still have over four months until Tennessee takes the field against Georgia Tech for the first game of the 2017 season.

In this case it’s also important to remember that a two quarterback system wouldn’t rule out Guarantano (if Dormady wins the job) from coming in for a play here and there (similar to what Florida with Tim Tebow in his freshman year).

But for what it’s worth, I wouldn’t expect the Vols to use a full blown two quarterback system in 2017. It might be September 4 before we know who Tennessee’s starter will be, but I do believe it be either Dormady or Guarantano in the opener, and not a combination of both.
