The Tennessee Vols were thoroughly embarrassed by the Georgia Bulldogs on Saturday afternoon.

The only way things can get worse for the Tennessee Vols right now is if they keep Butch Jones.

Georgia boat raced Tennessee on Saturday, shutting out the Vols 41-0.

At this point we all know that Jones’ time as the Vols’ head coach will be over soon.

But how soon is the question.

It’s clear that Jones has completely lost the locker room. The performance by the Vols on Saturday was worse than anything we saw under Dooley — and that includes the disastrous Kentucky game in 2011.

If Tennessee athletic director John Currie elects to keep Jones around past Sunday, he’s sending a signal to the Vol fan base that mediocrity is ok.

And it absolutely shouldn’t be.

The fans deserve better. Most of all, the players deserve better.

Will firing Butch Jones right now ensure that Tennessee lands a great head coach?

Probably not.

But it will ensure that Tennessee’s players get better than what they’re getting right now.

You come to UT to contend for SEC championships, not to get throttled by Georgia and told you’re “building a program” in year five.

Jones has done some good things at Tennessee, but right now he’s making the program a laughing stock.

If Currie fires Jones on Saturday night/Sunday morning it sends a message to the fan base, and the players, that being great is something that’s demanded at Tennessee.

Jones clearly isn’t the guy that will lead Tennessee to greatness. There are zero reasons to keep him around for a day longer.
