Tennessee Titan’s Bye and that Selfie Guy

facebooktwitterreddit

The Tennessee Titans are in the midst of a bye week, and certainly they need it! Frankly, if you’re like me, it will be good to take a break from watching them as well. Consider it your Fan Bye Week!

Few teams are any worse than the Titans, and while it breaks my heart to see it, we all knew there would be more development this year than real competitiveness.

  • I’m not going to bore you in this article by analyzing every single thing the Titans need to work on. The laundry list is long and soiled.

While they have a bit of a break though, I did want to focus a moment on Zach Mettenberger and Jake Locker.

I’ll take a look at the specific things that Zach needs to work on, ask some important questions, predict a thing or two about Locker, and then finally pick your brains as Titan fans.

Zach Mettenberg has a ton of fans, and from what I’ve read most seem excited about his potential. I’m not a fan of Mettenberger. I’ve never been a fan going all the way back to his college days, and I’ve expressed why.

Just because I’m not a fan doesn’t mean I don’t support him, hope for better than I see with my eye test, and hope that the Titans won’t have to go in another quarterback direction in the draft.

I hope Zach develops into the kind of player that does allow the Titans to focus next season on other, arguably more pressing needs. Forgive me if I have my doubts is all!

    More from Tennessee Titans

You might think me silly, but I find it difficult to take seriously any quarterback in the NFL so seemingly self-obsessed as Zach Mettenberger. I mean does any grown man take that many selfies, look that goofy on purpose while doing so, and still expect fans will take him seriously? Heck, I’m all for good fun, but that’s just weird!

Am I the only one that thinks so?  J.J. Watt at least apparently agrees with me, although I’m not certain that’s a ringing endorsement!

That said, I still support and hope for good development for Mettenberger, and hope the Titans can somehow turn him into the kind of quarterback I think this team actually needs if they ever hope for serious playoff contention.

I have a small list of things I hope the coaching staff works on with Zach this off week, and in the weeks to come! Yes, I actually hope that Zach gets every start from here on out. It will take that many snaps and more!

    Honey-Dos For Zach

    • Work On Your Mobility: Zach is as heavy-footed as a Ringling Brothers clown, and needs to work on being more mobile. I’m not talking about Russell Wilson mobility, but just the mental capacity to stay in the moment and learn to move a few steps to your right, left, forward or back, as needed. You’re not going to make any pocket guy into a mobile guy, but like in tennis, just move your danged feet!
    • Work On Your Focus: Zach has a tendency to collapse like a drunken teen on prom night when pressured. Zach, you need to learn to focus on the task at hand. You’re a big guy, so don’t worry about being hit. That’s going to happen, but if you can learn to move your feet just a little, and then focus mentally on the play you’re about to run instead of  recurring ACL injury, then you’ll fare better. In short, stop being a wuss!
    • Shorten Your Arm/Throw: This one isn’t easy when you’ve developed bad habits over years, but some small tweaks and adjustments are possible.  You have a strong-arm and a tight spiral Zach, but you get nervous and under-throw sometimes, and when you do pass your arm is too long. In other words, it takes you too long to get rid of the ball! You don’t need advice from me beyond that – the NFL is full of good QB coaches that can show you drills to help you with this problem. Get with them! Work on it!

    Titans – Final Truth

That’s my short list. My real list is longer, but the short list will do.

Now of course this could be categorized as mere, wishful thinking. I know Zach won’t read this, and I doubt any of the Titans’ coaches will. Call it venting. Call it hope. Call it &*^%* if you are a die-hard Mettenberger fan.

I don’t care what you call it, but I do care about the Titans and Mettenberger, and hope they’ll both use a little down-time to make improvements on what is already a season written off by most fans.

I’m often asked if I think Jake Locker will be back, in both the lineup this year, and as a QB on this Titans roster next year. I don’t know, but I doubt the latter, and hope not for the former!

I prefer Locker as the starting QB in the now, but I think Locker is gone next year. That said, and because I want to see Zach improve and be successful, he needs to get as many snaps as possible.

I hope he starts every single game the rest of the season, however ugly that might get.

Titan fans! What do you think about Mettenberger? I’d love to hear your thoughts, pro or con, so scroll down just a touch below this article, and comment. Thanks!
