Filip Forsberg vs. Peter Forsberg: A Swede Comparison

facebooktwitterreddit

A couple of weeks ago a good friend of mine (@tfranklin63) proposed the idea of a Peter Forsberg-Filip Forsberg comparison article. Initial thought: great idea. No, the two are not related, but both have some serious ice game, both have worn Predators sweaters, and the latter is off to a fast start that could mirror the career of the elder Forsberg.

  • With the Colorado Avalanche coming to Smashville tonight the timing was right to release the comparison.

Before we get there it is worth noting that the Avalanche have picked up 2 straight wins against quality opponents: Chicago and Tampa Bay. Colorado, currently 12th in the Western Conference, desperately needs points if they hope to make a push into the playoffs.

On the other hand, Nashville still sits atop the Western Conference standings despite looking flat in their last outing against Buffalo.

Regardless of the outcome of Tuesday’s game, there is a player vs. player matchup that is worth looking into. One that can’t be decided on a Tuesday night in February. In honor of the matchup with Colorado, let’s compare rookie seasons of two different phenoms.

Swede vs. Swede. Forsberg vs. Forsberg. Peter vs. Filip.

Peter Forsberg was a 3-time All-Star, a 2-time Stanley Cup champion, and is a Hall of Famer. He’s a Hart Trophy winner (MVP) and a Calder Trophy winner (Rookie of the Year) and also ranks 8th all-time in career points per game (he was quite the assist man). Seems a little unfair to compare Filip Forsberg to a guy like that because they have the same last name, right? Maybe not.

In Peter’s first year in the NHL with Quebec, he put up 50 points in 47 games in a lockout shortened season. He went on to win the Calder Trophy at the age of 22 and gained the nickname Peter The Great.

Filip’s rookie year has yielded similar results. Through 60 games this season, he has 51 points and is the heavy favorite to win the Calder.  Peter’s plus/minus was +17 and Filip is +20 on the year. Peter scored 15 goals and Filip has 20. Filip has also had some nicknames thrown around this season. “Scoresberg” has a nice ring to it. Maybe it will gain some traction.

So what have we accomplished here? Probably nothing. Will we get 100+ points out of Filip next season like Peter did his sophomore season? Maybe. Maybe not. The scary part though? Filip is only 20 years old — 2 years younger than Peter was at this point in his career. That leaves plenty of time to win at least 3 Cups in Nashville.
