Donnie Tyndall Fired At Tennessee This Morning

Head Basketball Coach Donnie Tyndall has been fired from the University of Tennessee this morning by Dave Hart.

It is important to know that this is not an NCAA-Tennessee investigation. This is strictly based on the Southern Mississippi program which Tyndall led. I have not seen or heard of what the NCAA investigations found, but suffice it to say that Tyndall must have been found to have been at fault for Level 1 or Level 2 violations of NCAA regulations.

Tyndall left Murray State in a mess when he left there for Southern Miss. Now the Southern Miss program will be hit. Dave Hart had to make the move based on the news he received yesterday from the NCAA. With Tennessee’s history of the Bruce Pearl infraction, the last thing Tennessee needs is the NCAA on campus snooping to make sure Donnie Tyndall’s program stays above board. His track record shows that might not be the case.

I hate this for the University and for Donnie. I like Donnie. I liked his style of defensive basketball. His matchup zone defense troubled SEC teams this season and he got more out of his team than I ever expected. But you have to fly straight. Donnie seemed to fly a little sideways. The transgressions just can’t be ignored.

Tennessee reported that Dave Hart fired Tyndall early this morning and then met with the players. I can only imagine what is going through these guys minds. Robert Hubbs III will have his third coach in three years when the season starts.

  • So where does Tennessee go now? I would make the call to Rick Byrd at Belmont. But that is me, and that will not be done. Rick may be set in his ways and very comfortable at Belmont. He is an outstanding coach and a even better person. Tennessee would be lucky to have him.

Murray State’s Steve Prohm will be sought after as well. He may end up at Alabama. Down the road in Chattanooga head coach Will Wade has done an outstanding job at UTC. He will be called. Who knows who else.

It is a good time for this to happen, instead of later in the season. Tennessee was hamstrung in recruiting with Tyndall’s issues getting plenty of press and mentions throughout the basketball world. Kids were not sure what Tyndall’s future looked like. Now they know.

After the Final Four the coaches will all gather. It will be a great time for Tennessee to begin the process…..again.
