Can The Vols Continue The Success Of the Return Game?

Cam Sutton and Evan Berry were spectacular last week. They will face a much better special team unit when they face Oklahoma. The Sooners are big and fast on special teams. They have athletes all over the field. What else would you expect from an Oklahoma team.

But these two guys are special. They have “it”, whatever “it” is. Sutton and Berry have a knack of finding the seam in the defensive coverage.

First of all each are fearless. That is key. Second of all, each are extremely fast. That is even more important. These two guys can get into the heads of the Oklahoma special teams.

In order for Tennessee to win they must have the short field again like last week. Field position is so key when you are “fighting for blades of grass” as Coach Butch Jones so matter of factly calls it.

Sometimes the fear of the return is more dangerous than the return. How many times do you see the Vols or other teams pooch kick a kick off that ends up giving the opposition the ball at the 40 to begin? How many times have you seen a shank from a punter trying to directional punt one? Several times I’m sure.

Face it, the Sooners are going to score tomorrow. It will be important for Berry and the return team to seize the momentum back to the Volunteer sidelines by hitting a long return.

Likewise, Sutton and company need to make sure that the ball is secure and put Vols offense in the very best field position possible after forcing a fourth down. The Vols need to put pressure on the Oklahoma team any way possible. This is one way that Tennessee can do so.
