The Tennessee Titans lost to the Indianapolis Colts on Sunday, but quarterback Marcus Mariota was still able to set a franchise record.

A slow start ultimately doomed the Titans on Sunday, as they fell to 5-6 after a 24-17 loss to the Colts.

There’s plenty of blame to go around for the loss, but Marcus Mariota shouldn’t be the recipient of that blame.

Mariota had a very efficient day, completing 25-38 passes for 290 yards, two touchdowns and 0 interceptions. He also carried the ball five times for 29 yards.

It was Mariota’s seventh straight game with multiple touchdown passes, breaking Warren Moon’s previous franchise record.

The Colts scored 14 points in the first quarter on Sunday. The early deficit forced the Titans out of their game plan.

After the game, Mariota blamed the Titans’ slow start for the loss, saying “If we want to be the team that we want to be, slow starts like that can’t happen”.

Playing from behind meant the Titans weren’t able to utilize Demarco Murray and the run game.

Mariota’s strong play wasn’t enough on its own to bring Tennessee back from defeat.

The loss doesn’t mean the Titans are completely out of the race for the division title in the AFC South, but it definitely makes it more difficult.

A Houston Texans loss on Monday night to the Oakland Raiders would certainly be a blessing for Tennessee.
