Mark Helfrich

Recently fired as head coach at Oregon

This is the home run hire. The name that essentially everyone wants to see in the press box calling plays next season.

Schematically speaking, Helfrich would be a great fit. He was a tremendous play caller at Oregon (under Chip Kelly), and he was instrumental in Marcus Mariota’s development as a quarterback.

But I’m not sure Knoxville is where Helfrich wants to be.

And Butch Jones is all about a good “fit”.

There’s some smoke with this name, but personally I would be a little bit surprised if Helfrich ends up taking the job.

If he does end up getting the job, then I wouldn’t expect Helfrich to be in Knoxville long.
