Every time there’s any sort of coaching vacancy on Tennessee’s staff, Peyton Manning gets brought up as a potential candidate.

There seems to be a small contingent of Tennessee Vols fans that desperately want Peyton Manning on the coaching staff.

For some reason, every time the Vols have an opening, there are a group of fans on message boards and social media that want Manning on the sidelines in Knoxville.

And I’m not sure why this keeps coming up.

Manning is one of the most beloved players in Tennessee history. He’s one of the greatest quarterbacks to ever play football.

But he’s not going to be on the coaching staff at Tennessee.

Ever.

For starters, Manning would fit on the current staff about as well as Tee Martin, Jay Graham, or Jim Bob Cooter would.

The style of offense from all of those guys mentioned is completely different than what Butch Jones runs.

But even if it was the same offense, it still wouldn’t happen.

Manning is a larger than life star. He’s a future hall of famer that had incredible success HIS way.

I don’t think Mannings’ post NFL career calling is to help a dual-threat quarterback develop at the collegiate level.

And can you imagine Manning out on the road recruiting? Yeah, me neither.

It’s just not who he is.

Manning will end up with a sweet color commentator gig, or he will end up with a front office job like John Elway.

But he isn’t going to be grinding away on the practice field in Knoxville or talking up some 17 year old kid in southwest Georgia.

Peyton Manning is a tremendous ambassador for the Tennessee football program.

And that should be quite enough for Vol fans.
