Mike Macintyre

Current head coach at Colorado

Mike Macintyre’s name was actually floated around in 2012 before the Vols hired Butch Jones.

Ironically, Macintyre was hired at Colorado after Butch Jones left them at the alter.

Before being hired at Colorado, Macintyre was the head coach at San Jose State. He completely turned the program around, going from 1-12 in his first season to 10-2 in his third season.

The first three seasons at Colorado were rough for Macintyre. But it all came together this past season. The Buffaloes enjoyed their first bowl win since 2004 and their first ten win season since 2001.

Macintyre also has plenty of experience in the SEC. He played college football at Vanderbilt, and he spent four years on Dave Cutcliffe’s staff at Ole Miss. Macintyre was also Cutcliffe’s defensive coordinator for two seasons at Duke.

I’m not sure how well received a Macintyre hire would be at Tennessee (his previous results are strikingly similar to Butch Jones’ pre-Tennessee results), but he’s a highly respected figured in the coaching industry.
