It seems like Tennessee always has a freshman that ends up playing a big role on defense.

I feel like Deandre Johnson, another early enrollee, could be that guy in 2017.

The Vols have talent at defensive end, but the departures of Derek Barnett and Corey Vereen leaves a big hole to be filled.

Currently, it looks like Kyle Phillips and Jonathan Kongbo are penciled in as Tennessee’s starting defensive ends.

But that’s obviously subject to change.

Kyle Phillips has only made one start in his first two seasons as a Vol (and that start came at defensive tackle). It wouldn’t take much for Johnson to at least find himself in a rotation with Phillips and Kongbo.

Dimarya Mixon will also be in the mix for the Vols, but playing time is currently wide open at the defensive end position on Rocky Top.
