This was a huge win for Butch Jone and the Vols for several reasons.

Tennessee obviously wanted to make a statement in the Taxslayer bowl against a solid Big 10 team.

They certainly achieved that with a 17 point win.

But even more important than that was the fact that Tennessee won their first bowl game in seven years.

The Vols hadn’t won a bowl game since beating Wisconsin in the Outback Bowl on January 1, 2008.

That’s a long time in between bowl wins — especially for a school with the pageantry of Tennessee.
