The Tennessee Titans know how they’d like the 2017 NFL Draft to play out, but things don’t always go according to plan. That’s why it’s good to always have a contingency plan in place.

If you ask any Tennessee Titans fan what a perfect first round looks like for their team, they’d likely tell you defensive back first, wide receiver second.

But what if there’s a player that’s rated higher on their draft board when the 18th overall selection rolls around? Or what if there isn’t a wide receiver with first round talent available?

Draft plans can often fall apart quickly, which is why the Titans need a back up plan.

One of those backup plans could be former Tennessee Vols wide receiver Josh Malone.

To be fair, I wouldn’t qualify Malone as a “backup plan”. But he’s currently not a projected first round draft pick, so that’s how he will be viewed.

Malone ran a 4.41 in the forty at the combine, which undoubtedly raised his draft stock.

According to the Tennessean, Malone thinks the question most NFL teams had about him was his speed.

If that’s true, then he could see his draft projection soar, thanks to his fast time in the forty.

I think teams, however, still have a lot of concerns about Malone’s experience/lack of production at the college level.

Malone didn’t really “break out” until his junior season. He had a great year, but his previous two years were average at best.

I tend to think the questions surrounding Malone’s experience will keep him in the third or fourth round range. Though that could change over the next month.

If Malone does stay in that range, then he would be a great value for the Titans in the third round.

Especially if the Titans miss out on a wide receiver in the first round.

The Titans have two picks in the third round (83rd and 100th overall).

If Malone is there when the Titans make the 83rd overall selection, and if they don’t take a wide receiver in the first round, then I think it would be an absolutely great pick.

Malone has first round talent. He’s fast, he runs great routes, and he knows how to get into the end zone (his 11 touchdowns last season weren’t a fluke).

If the Titans are able to make a trade for a wide receiver like Brandin Cooks, or sign someone in free agency, plus add Malone, it would be a ridiculous improvement over last season’s wide receivers group.

The Titans have plenty of options this off-season. Which is why it’s such an exciting time to be a Titans fan.
