3.100 Bucky Hodges — Tight End — Virginia Tech

Here’s a pick I can understand a little better.

Hodges is an athletic pass catching tight end that looks more like a wide receiver.

The Titans obviously need someone to replace Delanie Walker, who isn’t getting any younger.

Selecting Hodges in the third round would give Tennessee a player that could sit behind Walker for a couple of years and learn, before he’s relied on as “the guy”.

Here’s what NFL.com has to say:

"Hodges still has work to do as a route-runner and his inconsistent hands could be a concern. He can line up inside or outside while his size and ability to work all three levels of the field should be appealing to teams looking for pass catching options. The competitive nature of the NFL could bring out more consistent toughness in him as a blocker. He has the tools to be a long-time starter and touchdown-maker in the league."

It’s obvious that Hodges is a still a bit raw, but that’s what makes him the perfect “project tight end”.

You don’t expect players you draft in the third round to come in and start immediately, but you do want plenty of upside.

Hodges offers Pro-Bowl type upside at the tight end position, which makes him a great selection.
