Tennessee Vols: WR Josh Smith Being Threatened With $3 Million Civil Suit
By Zach Ragan
Tennessee Vols wide receiver Josh Smith is dealing with the fallout from a domestic assault charge in early May.
Tennessee Vols wide receiver Josh Smith was arrested in early May for allegedly assaulting his roommate.
Smith is now dealing with the fallout from the alleged assault.
According to WMNL radio host Jimmy Hyams, the victim in the alleged assault is demanding an $875,000 settlement from Smith and his family.
If the matter isn’t settled, Smith’s victim is threatening to move ahead with a $3 million civil suit. According to Hyams, Smith and his family have until May 29 to pay the $875,000.
Smith is obviously in the wrong in this case (he hasn’t been convicted of anything, but the facts seem pretty clear). And there’s no doubt the victim of the alleged assault deserves some sort of settlement.
But $875,000 seems like an extreme amount.
$3 million is an even more extreme amount.
It appears to me that Smith’s alleged victim is attempting to land a substantial amount of money from Smith’s family with the threat of a civil suit.
There’s no way any judge is going to award $3 million to Smith’s alleged victim.
I’d be surprised, in fact, if the judge awards anywhere close to the $875,000 that’s been requested by May 29.

I’m sure the matter will go to court, at which point a judge will determine a fair settlement between the two parties.
The potential civil suit shouldn’t affect Smith’s standing with the team. Whatever action is being taken has likely already been decided on by Butch Jones.
