Tier 5 — .500 Coaches

It’s a toss up whether or not these coaches will take their team to a bowl game. Most of the coaches in this tier have a career record hovering around .500

  • Dave Clawson — Wake Forest (103-103)
  • Ed Orgeron — LSU (22-29)
  • Matt Rhule — Baylor (28-23)
  • Derek Mason — Vanderbilt (13-24)
  • Mark Stoops — Kentucky (19-30)
  • Steve Addazio — Boston College (37-38)
  • Kliff Kingsbury — Texas Tech (24-26)
  • Dino Babers — Syracuse (41-24)
  • Gary Anderson — Oregon State (55-56)
  • Willie Taggart — Oregon (40-45)
  • Mike MacIntyre — Colorado (35-52)
  • Lovie Smith — Illinois (3-9)

Here we have guys that are basically bubble coaches when it comes to making a bowl game.

That’s not to say that these guys can’t break out and have a nine win season — because they certainly can. But typically these coaches are looking at 5 to 7 win seasons.

You might be surprised to see Ed Orgeron in this tier, but as you can see by his record, he still has a lot to prove as a head coach. The same goes for Willie Taggart.
