By Zach Ragan
3. Checkerboards
This is another tradition that is instantly recognizable as 100% Tennessee.
It’s also another tradition that Doug Dickey started.
In 1964, Dickey introduced the orange and white checkerboard end zones at Neyland. The Checkerboard’s disappeared for a while, but came back in 1989. They are now synonymous with Tennessee athletics.
In 2014 a new tradition began — the checkering of the crowd. The fan initiated movement received support from the school and it’s now one of the more impressive things you’ll ever see at a collegiate football game.
