2012 Season: Tennessee 35 NC State 21

Date: August 31

Location: Georgia Dome (Atlanta, GA)

Rankings: Both unranked

Attendance: 55,529

Why was it the biggest win of the year?

Analysts were rightfully down on the Volunteers entering the 2012 season, but Tennessee got off to a blazing start against NC State to open the season.

The Vols unleashed Cordarelle Patterson and Zach Rogers against highly touted NC State defensive back David Amerson, on their way to Derek Dooley’s biggest win of his career at Tennessee.

Tennessee used this win, along with a blowout of Georgia State, to briefly taste relevance under Dooley. The Vols were ranked 23rd after the second week of the season, before it all came crashing down in a loss at home to Florida.
