2001 Season: Tennessee 34 Florida 32

Date: December 1

Location: Ben Hill Griffin Stadium (Gainesville, FL)

Rankings: Tennessee — 5, Florida — 2

Attendance: 85,771

Why was it the biggest win of the year?

Tennessee’s matchup with Florida traditionally goes down in September, but it was pushed back in 2001 due to the terror attacks on September 11.

The pushed back game ended up giving fans a hell of a matchup. This basically ended up being the SEC East championship game and gave the winner a path to the national championship.

Tennessee, despite being ranked 5th in the nation, was an 18 point underdog to Florida in 2001.

But that did’t deter the Vols, who delivered a win for the ages, securing their spot in the SEC Championship game against LSU.

Unfortunately for the Vols, they lost to LSU the next week, ending their bid for another national championship. But Tennessee’s win against Florida in 2001 still goes down as one the best wins in the history of the program.
