2006 Season: Tennessee 51 Georgia 33

Date: October 7

Location: Sanford Stadium (Athens, GA)

Rankings: Tennessee — 14, Georgia — 9

Attendance: 92,746

Why was it the biggest win of the year?

2006 was a redemption year for Phillip Fulmer and the Volunteers. Randy Sanders was out as offensive coordinator and Dave Cutcliffe was back.

The Vols’ signature win of the season, at the time, was their win on the road against a top ten Georgia team. The Vols dropped 51 on the Bulldogs, in the midst of a five game winning streak.

In retrospect, many would argue that Tennessee’s win against Alabama was the biggest win of the year, simply because it was the last time the Vols beat Alabama.

But in 2006, that win wasn’t that big of a deal. Alabama finished 6-7 and fired Mike Shula, paving the way for the Nick Saban era to begin.
