Trey Smith — Offensive Lineman

It feels weird to call a true freshman a key player for the Vols in 2017, but that’s the type of talent that Trey Smith possesses.

We have no idea if Smith, who joined the Vols this past winter as an early enrollee and went through spring practice, will start for Tennessee when they kick off the season against Georgia Tech on September 4.

But we do know that Smith is the type of player that can be a stud in the SEC.

And the Vols haven’t had a stud offensive lineman since Butch Jones came to Rocky Top.

Smith worked at left tackle, right tackle and right guard during spring practice. That means Jones and new offensive line coach Walt Wells will have plenty of opportunities to plug Smith in somewhere on the offensive line.

Tennessee needs Smith to deliver on his five-star hype. If the Vols are going to win the SEC East, their offensive line has to be a strength and not a liability.
