What Should We Expect From The 2017 Vols?

So what should we expect from the Vols this season?

Well, that’s a hard question to answer. There are a lot of unknowns with this team. Anytime a program is starting a new quarterback, it limits your ability to gauge their potential success.

What we do know, however, is that Tennessee has plenty of talent to succeed in the SEC East in 2017.

I have the Vols going 9-3 in the regular season, with three conference losses. If the SEC East is muddied enough, that could be good enough to win the division, but that’s a big “if”.

A team with three losses in the conference hasn’t won the SEC East since South Carolina in 2010. So it can be done, but it’s not exactly the path you want to take.

In order to win the SEC East, the Vols are probably going to have to beat either Georgia or Florida (they beat both of them last season, but still lost the SEC East). Those games are definitely winnable for Tennessee (their only for sure loss is the Alabama game), but as of now I don’t think they go in the Volunteers’ favor.

I think the Vols have a real shot at winning 10 games in 2017 (including a bowl game). If Tennessee goes 10-3, that’s a successful season.

Unfortunately, there are just too many toss up games on Tennessee’s schedule. I have the Vols beating LSU and Georgia Tech, but both of those games could easily be losses for Tennessee.

Basically, the Vols could just as easily win 7 games as they could 10 games in 2017. That’s why it’s so hard to predict what will happen this season.

One thing, however, is certain — 2017 is a year where Butch Jones needs to get the best out of his team. The Vol faithful are yearning for a 10 win season. It’s been a decade since it’s happened, which is far, far too long.
