Butch Jones’ “Five-Star Heart” Comment

I have to confess — I fully understood what Butch Jones meant when he said he was recruiting players with “five-star hearts”. I chuckled when I heard the comment, but I had no clue it would turn into the narrative that it ended up becoming.

There’s nothing wrong with what Jones said, it just came at a terrible time. Jones had already made a “champions of life” reference at the end of the 2016 season.

The champions of life reference came at the worst possible time — after Tennessee blew the SEC East.

Fans weren’t quite over that comment when “five-star heart” stumbled out of Jones’ mouth.

But hey, Jones isn’t wrong. If a player doesn’t have a five-star heart, he’s probably not going to be very successful.

I doubt Jones regrets this comment, but Tennessee fans undoubtedly do. Media analysts and opposing fans used the comment to make Jones look foolish. Regardless of it was fair or not, it definitely wasn’t a good look for Tennessee.
