Lane Kiffin/Nu’Keese Richardson Debacle

Lane Kiffin’s most regrettable moment during his tenure as Tennessee’s head coach (aside from crashing a Lexus and whatever actually happened that night), had to be when he failed miserably at calling out then Florida head coach Urban Meyer.

At the time, Meyer was the king of the SEC. And if you come at the king, you best not miss.

Unfortunately for Vol fans, Kiffin missed — badly.

Kiffin tried to accuse Meyer of cheating when both Florida and Tennessee were recruiting wide receiver Nu’Keese Richardson. The former Vols head coach told a group of fans at a signing day celebration that Meyer cheated by calling Richardson while he was on campus at Tennessee.

It turned out that calling a recruit while he’s on a visit to another school isn’t a recruiting violation.

Kiffin was forced to publicly apologize to Florida and Meyer.

The Kiffin/Meyer rivalry turned out to be very brief and very one-sided.

And Richardson ended up being a bust as a college player. He would be arrested multiple times and eventually removed from the team.
