Quarterback Situation

Who will Butch Jones start at quarterback against the Yellow Jackets? And will both quarterbacks play?

Those are the two biggest questions, among many, surrounding the Volunteers in week one.

Tennessee released their first depth chart on Wednesday and to absolutely no one’s surprise it listed junior Quinten Dormady and redshirt freshman Jarrett Guarantano as co-starters.

Early in the off-season, I suggested Jones would list the two quarterbacks as co-starters simply so he wouldn’t give anything away to Georgia Tech.

At this point, however, I’m starting to think maybe Jones really doesn’t know who his starting quarterback will be in 2017.

And there’s nothing wrong with that.

In 2004, Brent Schaeffer opened the season as Tennessee’s starting quarterback, before Erik Ainge took the job from him.

We could see a very similar situation unfold in 2017, because we really don’t know what to expect from either Dormady or Guarantano.

But since the Vols are kicking off the season against a tough opponent, I think we’ll have a great idea of Tennessee’s plan at the quarterback position after their game against the Yellow Jackets.
