Should the Tennessee Titans bring back running back Chris Johnson?

On Friday, former Tennessee Titans running back Chris Johnson was released by the Arizona Cardinals.

Johnson played for the Titans from 2008-2013 and had some incredibly productive seasons.

It was during this time that Johnson had one of the best years ever for a running back, rushing for over 2,000 yards in 2009.

But I’m among those that believe Johnson’s 2009 season inflated the view of him as a running back. If you take away that one season, his numbers were good, but not great.

Johnson was decent in 2015 with the Arizona Cardinals, rushing for 814 yards in 11 games. But his ability to stay healthy has rapidly declined since that time. He played in only four games last season before he was placed on injured reserve with a groin injury.

In those four games last season, Johnson rushed for only 95 yards.

The former East Carolina standout will turn 32 on September 23. I think it’s quite obvious he doesn’t have anything left in the tank.

So how would the Titans benefit from bringing Johnson back into the fold?

Well that’s simple — they wouldn’t.

Johnson’s skills are clearly diminished. If the Titans were to sign him, he’d be the third running back in the absolute best case scenario.

If you looked at any other aging running back, with a different name, you wouldn’t even hesitate to say no way in hell.

And if there’s one thing in sports you should never do, it’s sign someone because of their name.

Johnson had a great run as a Titan, but that time is over. And now, it appears his NFL career likely is as well.
