If the Tennessee Vols fire head coach Butch Jones, they could be in for a wild coaching search.

The Tennessee Vols are in a much better position to hire a potentially elite head coach in 2017 than they were in 2012.

That’s in large part due to the good things Butch Jones has accomplished at Tennessee. He may be drawing the ire of Vol fans right now — and for good reason — but we can’t pretend like his accomplishments at Tennessee aren’t important.

Thanks to Jones, the Vol football program has a more talented roster. And any off-the-field issues are non existent (for the most part). The APR is in a good spot and recruiting relationships in the southeast are strong.

But just because the Volunteers are in a better position to hire a great head coach, doesn’t mean it will actually happen. Look at LSU last year, or Texas a couple of years before. Things don’t always play out the way we expect.

Which is why it might be important to get familiar with some “under the radar” head coaching names. I know it’s not ideal, but you at least want to know who some of these guys are and where they’ve been.
