Tennessee Vols: “Under The Radar” Coaches That Could Replace Butch Jones
By Zach Ragan
D.J. Durkin
Head coach at Maryland
If you go just by D.J. Durkin’s resumé, he has to be an obvious candidate for a head coaching job in the SEC.
Durkin started his coaching career as a graduate assistant under Urban Meyer at Bowling Green, before moving on to a similar position at Notre Dame.
After a return to Bowling Green, Durkin coached defensive ends under Jim Harbaugh at Stanford, before joining Will Muschamp’s staff at Florida. Durkin eventually served as the Gators’ defensive coordinator. He led Florida to a win in the Birmingham Bowl after Muschamp was fired in 2014.
Durkin was hired by Habaugh to lead Michigan’s defense in 2015, before taking over as Maryland’s head coach in late 2015.
Obviously, Durkin wouldn’t be a top choice for the Vols, but he does have some decent experience coaching in the SEC and in the B1G. This would be another gamble hire by the Volunteers.
