Frank Wilson

Head coach at UTSA

The Vols could probably do a lot worse than Frank Wilson, a former Tennessee assistant.

Wilson served as the Ole Miss running backs coach from 2005-07, before making brief stops with Southern Mississippi and Tennessee (Wilson was part of Kiffin’s staff in 2009 as wide receivers coach).

After Kiffin departed for USC, Wilson was hired by Les Miles to serve as LSU’s running backs coach and recruiting coordinator. Wilson landed his first head coaching gig when UTSA hired him in 2016.

UTSA showed immediate improvement when Wilson took over. The Roadrunners won 4 games in 2014 and 3 games in 2015. Wilson led the team to six wins and a bowl game in 2016. And he has UTSA off to a 3-0 start this season, including a win against Baylor.

There’s always some concern about how a person that’s never been a coordinator will fair as a head coach as a major program.

But it’s clear that Wilson knows what he’s doing as a head coach.
