Phillip Montgomery

Head coach at Tulsa

Oh boy, Vol fans won’t like this one.

Montgomery has no SEC experience, and his team is off to a 1-4 start this season.

So why even consider him?

That’s easy — Tulsa’s stellar 2016 season.

In 2016, Montgomery helped lead Tulsa to a 10-3 season, which included wins over SMU, Memphis, UCF and Cincinnati.

Did Montgomery catch lightning in a bottle in 2016?

It’s hard to say for sure, but he does at least appear to be a good head coach. But there’s absolutely no way to tell if he’s cut out for the SEC. If the Vols were to hire Montgomery, they could expect moderate success, but they’d likely end up searching for another coach in four years.

Again, hopefully the Volunteers don’t make it this far down the list.
