As we head into the second week of October, it’s time to take an updated look at who should replace Tennessee Vols head coach Butch Jones in 2018.

With the season progressing, the list of coaches to replace Tennessee Vols head coach Butch Jones is ever changing.

When it first became evident that Jones was on his way out at Tennessee, I was all in on names like P.J. Fleck and Mike Norvell.

But as the 2017 season unfolds, so do the choices to replace Jones.

I’m still out on names like Tee Martin (except in this scenario), Jim Bob Cooter, Greg Schiano and D.J. Durkin.

And please don’t buy into the Jon Gruden talk again. SEC Network host Paul Finebaum reignited the Grumors this past week when he said he spoke to someone “important” at Tennessee that suggested Gruden would be the Vols’ first call if/when Jones is fired.

Finebaum might be accurate that Tennessee will call Gruden. But I still feel confident that Gruden has no desire to coach in college.

By the way, you can also forget about guys like Chris Petersen and Gary Patterson. They aren’t going anywhere.

Oh, and I’m not even going to address the asinine suggestion of Mark Helfrich and Jeff Fisher that one Tennessee beat writer made on national television last week. Those suggestions are silly and a straight up insult to Vol fans.

Anyway, here are the five coaches I think, as of October, that Tennessee should target above any others.
