Former Tennessee Vols head coach Lane Kiffin routinely has fun with Twitter users — especially UT fans.

Given the reaction of Tennessee Vols vans when Lane Kiffin abruptly departed Knoxville for USC in early 2010, I never thought there would be folks actually wanting him to return to Rocky Top.

But that seems to be where we are right now, thanks to Butch Jones’ underperforming Tennessee teams.

There are still a lot of Vol fans that harbor ill will toward Kiffin for his decision to leave Tennessee after one season, but you’d be surprised at how many fans want to see Lane back on the sideline at Neyland.

It’s easy to understand why Kiffin would be welcomed back by a portion of the Vol fan base. Despite his strange coaching path, Kiffin possesses one of the best offensive minds in college football.

And the group of Tennessee fans that realize that, have no qualms about firing off tweets to Kiffin requesting his return.

Kiffin, for his part, doesn’t seem to mind the attention. He routinely mentions Tennessee in tweets, retweets Vol players, and he’s liked several tweets that mention him returning to Knoxville.

Maybe Lane just likes to have fun with Tennessee fans, or maybe he misses Knoxville. Only he knows for sure.

For what it’s worth, I don’t think Kiffin regrets leaving Tennessee for USC. Maybe he regrets the circumstances and how things went down, but he would’ve been a fool to turn down USC at that point. You live and learn, and Kiffin has certainly done plenty of both.

I can’t foresee a scenario where Kiffin ever returns to Tennessee, but I have to admit that I’m a little intrigued by what would happen if he did.

But for now, we’ll just have to watch Kiffin have fun with Vol fans on Twitter. It seems to be his favorite new hobby.
