Tennessee Vols head coach Butch Jones’ hot seat is currently engulfed in flames.

One of the biggest criticisms of Butch Jones while he’s been the head coach of the Tennessee Vols is that he is not a very good in-game coach.

Jones, who has been criticized for not making “halftime adjustments” throughout his career at Cincinnati and Tennessee, openly admitted after the Vols’ loss to South Carolina that he had no clue why his team couldn’t run the ball against the Gamecocks’ defense.

I get that you have to review the film to get a better grasp of what was and wasn’t working, but Jones should at least know what South Carolina’s defensive front was doing on Saturday.

Jones’ job on Saturdays is to figure out what the other team is doing and do his best to beat it. It does no good to watch the film on Sunday to see what South Carolina was doing defensively.

It’s beyond obvious to anyone who watches college football that Jones is in over his head. He’s been consistently out-coached during his nearly five years at Tennessee. The big games he’s won, games against Florida and Georgia, have been mostly due to the insane talent of players like Josh Dobbs, Derek Barnett, Alvin Kamara etc.

Now that Jones’ safety net players are gone, we are seeing him for what he is — a decent recruiter that is making it up as he goes along on Saturdays.

Jones rarely deviates from his team’s game plan, which is a result of his inability to gauge the feel of the game.

Honestly, it seems like the only coaching Jones does during a game is freaking out and getting extremely red in the face while yelling at the referees.

Former Vols wide receiver Jayson Swain pointed out recently that Tennessee’s players don’t even look to Jones on the sideline for coaching.

You don’t see this on the sideline at Alabama. You don’t even see this on the sideline at Vanderbilt.

Butch Jones is fools gold. He is the epitome of “fake it til you make it”. And now that he’s made it, it’s quite clear he can’t fake it anymore.

Fortunately for Tennessee, he’s on the way out of Knoxville.

Let’s just hope the Vols don’t get fleeced again in their next coaching search.
