Vols Football: Ranking The 10 Best Head Coaching Options For Tennessee
By Zach Ragan
6. Greg Schiano — Defensive coordinator at Ohio State
I’ve been critical of folks who have floated Greg Schiano’s name as a head coaching candidate at Tennessee, but I’m starting to come around a bit.
Schiano is the first coach on this list that I feel could win around 10 games a year at Tennessee, but I’m not sure how much more you could expect out of him.
You can’t deny that he did a good job at Rutgers, but it seemed like he topped out around eight or nine wins a season there (he did have one 11 win season in the midst of his run there).
Things didn’t go as smooth for Schiano in the NFL. In his two seasons with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Schiano went 11-21.
One of the biggest criticisms of Schiano when he was a college coach was that he didn’t connect with players very well.
However, if Schiano was humbled at all by his fall from grace as a head coach, then we can assume that he’s learned a thing or two by serving as Urban Meyer’s defensive coordinator at Ohio State.
Schiano is only 51, so he’s going to get another shot as a head coach. The Vols could do a lot worse.
