There’s a group of Tennessee Vols fans that apparently want former head coach Lane Kiffin to return to Knoxville.

Former Tennessee Vols head coach Lane Kiffin was asked by Clay Travis on Friday morning how he’d feel if Butch Jones was fired and someone from the program called him to gauge his potential interest in returning to his old position.

Kiffin answered the question simply by saying “you know I’m not going to answer that”.

You could argue, however, that Kiffin’s non-answer can be interpreted as a “yes, I’d absolutely be interested in returning to Tennessee”.

Considering Kiffin’s recent Vol tweets, and the comment from ESPN’s Chris Low that he’d go back to Knoxville in a heartbeat, it almost feels like Lane is publicly campaigning for the head coaching gig at Tennessee.

There’s no doubt that Kiffin would love to return to a Power-5 conference as a head coach. And it’s been widely documented that he’d enjoy returning to Tennessee.

But there’s just no way it happens. I mean what would Kiffin do, give a public apology for leaving Tennessee in 2010?

I’m sure he regrets the way it all went down, but he’s on record as saying that he doesn’t regret taking the USC job.

Tennessee’s football program is in a position where they can’t afford to gamble. They have to get this next hire absolutely right, and there’s nothing to suggest that Kiffin isn’t a risk anymore, or that he’d lead the program to greatness.

Kiffin can publicly campaign all he wants to for Butch Jones’ job, but it’s not going to happen.
