Tennessee Vols head coach Butch Jones is at a loss right now when it comes to UT’s offense.

If you’re expecting Butch Jones to fix the Tennessee Vols’ offense, then you’re going to be extremely disappointed.

Jones can’t fix the offense because he isn’t sure exactly what the problem is — other than Tennessee isn’t “executing”.

And look, I’m not claiming to have the answers either. But I’m just a writer, I don’t make a lot of money coaching college football.

Jones told the media on Monday that he feels his team is practicing well but then he said that it just doesn’t show up on game days.

That sounds like the team isn’t prepared very well. And that falls back on coaching.

Jones, however, chooses to blame the players not executing. Passing the buck as a head coach isn’t a good idea.

You absolutely have to practice well to play well. But practicing well doesn’t mean you’re guaranteed to play well. Great players, and coaches, elevate their game when they take center stage.

And that’s where I think Jones has a major fault that’s preventing him from being a good coach — he doesn’t believe in gamers.

We’ve seen it a countless number of times during Jones’ tenure in Knoxville. He doesn’t trust young players and he doesn’t believe guys step up under the lights.

Apparently this same way of thinking applies to his coaching techniques as well. Jones appears to think that his game week preparation will get the job done on Saturdays.

Well I’ve got news for you, Butch — if you get out-coached on game day, it doesn’t matter what you did during the week. You’re going to suffer a loss.

Jones isn’t going to excel as a coach at the Power 5 level until he drops the analytics and charts and starts coaching from his gut.

Hopefully for Jones that’s a lesson he’ll carry with him to his next job, because it’s too late for him to turn it around at Tennessee.
