Tennessee Vols: It Looks Like Butch Jones Is A Huge Hypocrite
By Zach Ragan
The Tennessee Vols suspended two players after they were arrested for possession on Tuesday night.
This probably won’t come as a surprise, but Tennessee Vols head coach Butch Jones might be a hypocrite.
And that’s because he made a hypocritical move on Wednesday.
Jones elected to suspend John Kelly and Will Ignont after they were arrested for possession of marijuana on Tuesday night in Knoxville.
So how does that make Jones a hypocrite?
That’s simple, because Jones didn’t suspend wide receiver Jauan Jennings for the same offense.
Jennings was arrested on January 15 for possession of marijuana. His charges were later dismissed, but Jennings admitted to the arresting officer that he had marijuana in the back of his truck.
How is it that Jennings escaped a suspension, while Kelly and Ignont are going to be forced to miss the Kentucky game?
I’m sure it will be suggested that Jennings was punished during spring football. And that might be the case.
But come on now, is missing practice time the same thing as missing a game?
It’s definitely not.
The punishments aren’t consistent, even though the offense is basically the same thing.
So what would be the reason for the inconsistency from Jones?
Well I think it’s pretty simple. Kelly is the best player on the team. He might be the best running back in the conference. Without Kelly, the Vols’ offense will struggle to do much of anything (and it’s already been a struggle lately).
By suspending Kelly, Jones already has a built in excuse for losing to Kentucky.
The Wildcats are favored against the Vols (if the game hasn’t been pulled yet due to Kelly’s suspension), which is something that should never ever happen. Jones probably assumes that he can use not having Kelly on Saturday night as a reason to not be fired if Tennessee loses to Kentucky.
That might sound a bit absurd, but there aren’t many coaches that choose to use excuses as often as Jones (I guess he’s forgetting that Florida beat Tennessee this season with nine players suspended). I have no doubt that he’ll mention not having Kelly if the Volunteers lose.

Jones loves to preach consistency and details. It’s too bad he can’t practice what he preaches.
