Matt Campbell — Head coach at Iowa State

A few weeks ago I was scoffing at the idea of Matt Campbell at Tennessee.

But after watching him upset two top five teams, I had to admit that I’m very intrigued by him.

Campbell has Iowa State in the top 25, after leading them to a 3-9 record in his first season in 2016. He’s led the Cyclones to wins against Oklahoma and TCU this season.

Winning at Iowa State is not something that typically happens, but Campbell is finding a way to get it done.

My biggest concern about Campbell is that he has never coached in the SEC at any level. I’m growing more and more skeptical of coaches that jump to the SEC without ever having coached in the conference before. The level of scrutiny in the SEC isn’t for everyone. And we have no idea how Campbell would react to the media circus in Knoxville.

There’s also the fact that Campbell reportedly has a rather high buyout, which could dissuade Tennessee from pursuing him.
