CHARLOTTE, NC – DECEMBER 01: Coach Greg Schiano of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers argues with referee Ron Winter /

Greg Schiano — Defensive coordinator at Ohio State

This might be the safest, most realistic hire the Vols can make.

We all know what Schiano did at Rutgers was remarkable. And he should be an even better coach after experience in the NFL and working as Urban Meyer’s defensive coordinator at Ohio State.

(I recently went over how Schiano dedicated himself to making changes in how he deals with players, etc.)

I don’t know if Schiano would have Meyer type success at Tennessee, but I do believe he’d have the Volunteers making trips to Atlanta in December more often than not.

Plus there’s the fact that Schiano is close to Jarrett Guarantano’s family. It’s obvious that Guarantano will be Tennessee’s starting quarterback next season, so it would be a big deal to get a coach that already knows him.
