Butch Jones “resigns” after Vanderbilt game

So let’s say Tennessee manages to make it to 6-6 by the end of the season, and Jones hasn’t been fired yet.

First off, I think Vol fans would be ready to storm the castle out of frustration.

But there’s still no way Jones coaches Tennessee beyond the 2017 season.

Jones would likely be allowed to “resign” to pursue other opportunities. I’m not sure why the Tennessee athletic department would feel the need to do this for Jones, after the way this season has unfolded, but it wouldn’t necessarily shock me.

If Jones does resign after the Vanderbilt game, then an interim would be put in place while the Vols  scramble to hire their next coach.

Most college football coaching hires happen by the end of the first week of December. If Jones is gone after the Vanderbilt game, it would give Tennessee a two-week window to make a good hire.
