Dan Mullen — Mississippi State Head Coach

I’ve went back and forth on the idea of Dan Mullen at Tennessee.

I’m not as high on him as most folks, but it’s still obvious he’s a pretty good coach.

The narrative around Mullen seems to be that he’s made Mississippi State relevant with a bunch of ragtag players that wouldn’t get a sniff at most other SEC programs.

But that’s not exactly factual.

Since Mullen’s arrival at Mississippi State, he’s averaged the 26th best recruiting class in the nation.

Obviously he’s going up against teams with much better talent in the SEC West, but it’s also not like he’s regularly beating other top tier programs. He’s 0-9 against Alabama, 2-7 against LSU, 3-6 against Auburn and 4-4 against Arkansas.

Has he done a good job?

Of course he has.

But is he an absolute sure thing at Tennessee?

I’m not 100 percent sold.

I think Mullen would be a good hire for the Vols. But I don’t know if he’s capable of delivering a national championship.

At this point, however, anything is better than Butch Jones.
