Mike Norvell — Memphis head coach

I put Mike Norvell in the same category as Willie Taggart. In fact, I think I like him a little more, despite having less experience as a head coach.

Norvell came into a good situation with Memphis after Justin Fuente left to take the head coaching job at Virginia Tech. But the program didn’t drop off at all once Norvell took over. And the Tigers are off to a 8-1 start this season, which could lead to a historically good season for Memphis.

Again, I think Norvell is a guy that’s going to be a really good coach. But a lot of folks probably said the same thing about Butch Jones after his time at Cincinnati.

I automatically like Norvell a lot more than Jones (I like everyone more than Jones), but he’s still a big gamble.

There’s still reason for hope if the Vols get this far down their list, but there is still also a good chance Tennessee is back in the same situation in four or five years.
