COLLEGE STATION, TX – OCTOBER 28: Head coach Dan Mullen of the Mississippi State Bulldogs waves to the crowd as he walks off the field after the game against the Texas A /

Dan Mullen — Mississippi State Head Coach

Information has been limited through this coaching search so far, but all signs point to Dan Mullen being the top target.

Mullen has split the Vol fan base a bit, due to his lackluster record against Alabama and ranked teams. But I don’t think that record tells the whole story. Mullen has led Mississippi State to unprecedented success by program standards. And he’s done it in the toughest division in college football.

No coach is going to be elite without landing elite talent. Good coaching matters, obviously, but you have to have great players to compete with Alabama.

Imagine what Mullen could do with the resources and talent at Tennessee.

There are going to be problems with every single candidate you find, but Mullen is as good of an option as anyone (that’s actually “available”).

It hasn’t been confirmed, but there are rumblings that Tennessee could talk with Mullen as early as Friday (Mississippi State plays their last game on Thursday night).
