The Tennessee Vols’ coaching search continues!!!

The Tennessee Vols dodged a bullet on Thursday when NC State head coach Dave Doeren officially declined a job offer from John Currie.

Doeren would’ve been a disaster for Tennessee. He’s basically a clone of Butch Jones.

But that’s behind us. So where do the Vols go from here?

Well the obvious answer is still Lane Kiffin, but they’re very resistant to that idea. It’s much more likely that Tennessee will call SMU’s Chad Morris or Maryland’s DJ Durkin.

Durkin would also be a terrible choice, so hopefully the Vols don’t go down that road.

Morris obviously isn’t my top choice for Tennessee, but I’d be way more comfortable with him than Doeren or Durkin. Morris has a great offensive mind, he’s a good recruiter, and he’s breathed life into the previously deceased SMU football program. Tennessee has already showed us they can do much worse.

But what the Vols truly need to do is hire Les Miles and bring in Tee Martin as the offensive coordinator/coach in waiting. It would excite fans and it would give the Vols their best chance for success in 2018 and beyond.

Miles clearly isn’t a long term option, but he’s one of the few guys available that has a national championship to his credit and he’s actually beat Nick Saban.

I don’t think I would take Dave Doeren or DJ Durkin over him (thought the UTAD clearly feels different).

And bringing Martin back into the fold, as the head coach in waiting, would be a better situation for the Vols’ beloved son, instead of handing him the reigns of a program in chaos.

But that’s just my opinion. Maybe it carries some weight, but most likely not.

Hopefully the Vols get this right soon.
