Tennessee Vols defensive back Rashaan Gaulden proved on Saturday night that Kirk Herbstreit is a massive hypocrite.

Kirk Herbstreit has managed to completely alienate the Tennessee Vols fan base in the last couple of weeks.

Herbstreit went off the rails in his defense of Greg Schiano after Tennessee fans/boosters blocked the hire of the Ohio State defensive coordinator.

But that has nothing to do with Vols defensive back Rashaan Gaulden’s “ownage” of Herbstreit on Twitter this weekend.

Herbstreit tweeted his support of Baker Mayfield on Saturday night (after Mayfield won the Heisman), saying that Mayfield is misunderstood and sometimes his competitive spirit gets the best of him.

Those comments are a lot different than Herbstreit’s comments about Gaulden last month (after Gaulden flipped off Alabama’s fans).

"Herbstreit: “You’re thinking, with everything that’s been going on with Tennessee, that guy will probably never play again. Next series, defense is on the field, No. 7 is back in the lineup playing on the field. And you wonder why Tennessee has issues. They don’t have any discipline. (Butch Jones) should’ve taken his uniform off, sent him upstairs to go get a popcorn and say you’re no longer on the team and sent a message to the whole team.”"

Gaulden had a strong reaction to Herbstreit’s Mayfield tweet.

Gaulden is 100 percent right here.

Herbstreit is fine with Mayfield grabbing his crotch on the sideline because he’s an incredibly talented player on a team that’s competing for a national championship.

Gaulden, while also extremely talented, isn’t a household name and he played on a team that finished 4-8.

So I guess the message from Herbstreit is that as long as you’re a Heisman contender and play on a great team, you can do whatever you want on the field.

That seems like a terrible message to kids that look up to Herbstreit, but I wouldn’t expect any less from him at this point. His true character has definitely been exposed in the last few weeks.

Kudos to Rashaan Gaulden, though, for standing up for himself. I don’t applaud his decision to flip off the Alabama crowd, but I also recognize he’s a college aged kid that plays with passion. Much like Baker Mayfield.

Too bad Gaulden doesn’t fit Herbstreit’s definition of a misunderstood player with a competitive spirit.
