The Tennessee Vols received a bit of bad news on Wednesday afternoon.

2018 four-star quarterback Adrian Martinez decommitted from the Tennessee Vols on Wednesday and subsequently announced his commitment to the Nebraska Cornhuskers.

Martinez, 6’2″/205 lbs from Fresno, CA, had been committed to Tennessee since May 12.

The dual threat quarterback is rated by 247Sports as the 42nd ranked player in the state of California and the 263rd best player in the nation.

Martinez, who was the second player to decommit from the Vols on Wednesday (both quarterbacks), also has offers from Alabama, California, Colorado, Georgia, Miami, Oklahoma and West Virginia, among several others.

Unlike Tennessee’s earlier decommitment on Wednesday, Martinez was a player that Jeremy Pruitt and Tyson Helton wanted to keep.

Pruitt and Helton made the trip California earlier this week to visit Martinez. Pruitt reportedly told Martinez during the visit that he was a great fit for the Vols’ pro-style offense. He also told Martinez that he could compete for the starting job as a true freshman.

But apparently that wasn’t enough to keep Martinez committed to Tennessee.

Is this something that should concern Vol fans?

Honestly, I think it’s far too early for any concern. It’s tough to keep a recruiting class together when there’s a coaching change.

And it’s even tougher this year with the early signing period.

Pruitt has proved throughout his career to be an elite recruiter. Butch Jones proved that recruiting to Tennessee isn’t that difficult (but he didn’t prove that until his second signing day at UT).

Things will be just fine on Rocky Top. Martinez just felt like he was a better fit a Nebraska.
